The Artist behind Nina Louisa Art

The Artist behind Nina Louisa Art

I met Nina Swann at a market and immediately fell in love with her work. Her art form is called pyrography (also commonly known as wood burning). It's the art of using a heated tool to burn graphics and designs into surfaces like wood or leather. We commissioned several pieces for our gift shop and I was impressed by the detail she could create with her tools - and all freestyle! The way she captured the essence of draped spanish moss on an oak tree with such a tool was incredible. I'm happy to share her work and values as an artist.

Tell us about your business and why you got started.
I'm a wood burning and illustration artist from Germany and I started Nina Louisa Art back in 2020. I came to wood burning by accident but it was an art form that my mother practiced when I was little and it always fascinated me. Like so many others during the pandemic, I decided now is the time to try something new and I fell in love. There is something so peaceful about the art of burning and I love that it's a slow process and it can't be rushed. I found my voice as an artist and I'm so grateful for the community and friendships that came along with it.

What’s your REAL JOB title?
Mom! But my son just told me I can’t write that here and need to be more professional! 🤣 I keep on hearing Wonder Woman because I juggle a lot of things at once; but if you ask me, I’m just doing the best I can.

How does your business align with innovation, sustainability, or community engagement?
All of the above are very important to me. I am committed to reuse packaging as much as I can and recycle materials. One of my newest products is a bracelet that features hand burned beads and semi precious gemstones from necklaces that I find thrifting or from second hand art stores like Starlandia. (As a Southern Charm Subscription Box subscriber, you’ll receive this beauty in this month’s box).

Community is also very important to me, I’m serving two organizations privately as a volunteer and it’s just something that fills my heart with so much joy. I am also currently working on a community project with our local library and Nina Louisa Art for their winter program and I’m very excited about it.

At Salacia, we’re all about relaxation. What does relaxation look like for you?
A good book and a hot bath!

Salacia: Yessss!
