Soap Berries

$9.00

Berries instead of soap? These soapberries are eco-friendly and an alternative for those sensitive to traditional laundry detergents.

These dried berries are grown on a tree and come from the Lychee fruit family. When agitated in water, they produce a natural surfactant, saponin, which gently cleanses laundry. They even soften clothes! Soapberries have been used since ancient times for washing by Asian and Native American cultures.

Simply place 4-5 soapberries in the provided cloth bag and toss in the washer with your clothes. Berries can be re-used until paper thin, at least up to 10 times. Clothes come out smelling fresh and clean and super soft.

Use soapberries until they lose their dark, deep color, become paper thin, and are brittle when dry. The soap is in the husk of the shell so pieces are as effective as whole berries. Many berries are provided as halves, so use 2 to equal a whole.

Available in a set of 50 loads, or a set of 10 loads.

  • Save money compared to traditional laundry detergent. 4-5 berries needed for 10 loads of laundry!

    Q&A

The cloth bag with soapberries made its way into the dryer! Are they still okay to use?
    Yes! They’ll still work!

I have broken soapberries and pieces of soapberries that are not whole. Can I still use these?
Yes! The saponin that cleans your items is in the husk, so just use an equivalent amount of soapberries. Two halves make a whole, right?

After my clothes go through the wash cycle, do I need to remove the bag before the rinse cycle? Won’t my clothes get washed again?
Great question, but actually, the rinse cycle has cooler water and less agitation than the wash cycle, so very little saponin is released in this phase. If you keep the bag in during this cycle, which we recommend, your clothes will actually come out softer! The saponin acts as a fabric softener too.

    Washing Tips

    • Do not overfill your washing machine.
    • For tough stains and heavily soiled items: Pre-soak 4-5 soapberries in the cloth bag in a cup of hot water for 3 minutes. Then add the water (and the bag with soapberries) to your wash load.
    • Put fewer clothes in the washing machine to provide the most agitation.
    • For very greasy stains, pretreat with a stain remover before adding to the load.
    • For hand-washing: Soak a bag with 2 soapberries in a cup of hot water for a few minutes and then add the mix to your sink / tub.
