It all started with a dream.
Cari Phelps, an award-winning designer and branding expert from Savannah, had a dream that she designed a package of bath salts for a client with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. When she woke up the next morning, she started doing research and decided to make her dream a reality. Her research uncovered that "Tybee" is the Euchee Indian word for salt, sparking the idea for a natural bath and body care line infused with the essence of the South. Combining Atlantic sea salt and regional botanicals, Cari founded Salacia Salts in 2012.
From the heart of Savannah, Georgia, Salacia Salts crafts high-quality, environmentally responsible bath and beauty products. Every item is handmade in small batches, cruelty-free, and free of colorants and petrochemicals. Cari and her dedicated team of five women are committed to promoting natural beauty, holistic wellness, and sustainability.
Salacia Salts' product line celebrates the coastal spirit with native Southern botanicals and chic ocean-inspired design. These thoughtfully packaged goods are available nationwide in select retail locations and at the company’s production studio and gift shop in Historic Downtown Savannah, near Forsyth Park. The studio also offers interactive workshops, where visitors can create custom salt soaks and scrubs at the blending bar. Open by appointment, the gift shop features locally made and sustainably sourced products, along with everyday essentials from this proudly female-led business.

The first product developed for the company, a salt soak, is packaged in reclaimed “upcycled” wine bottles. Salacia Salts uses post-consumer recycled packaging whenever possible with the goal of eliminating plastic and water-heavy formulas from the product line. Educating people about the products they put on their skin is a top priority, including how packaging affects the Earth’s land and seas. Salacia Salts’ products are ideal for people with sensitive skin or looking for healthy alternatives to oils and harsh ingredients found in traditional body care.

Who is Salacia?
The Roman sea goddess Salacia serves as the inspiration for Salacia Salts. According to Roman mythology, Salacia traveled through the ocean on a pearl-shell chariot pulled by seahorses and dolphins.
Why a salt goddess? Well, Savannah sits on the coast of Georgia and the barrier island Tybee, just 20 minutes east of downtown, is the Native American word for salt. Yes, it was called Salt Island. Once we discovered this cool fact, we started bottling up the salts and blending with other ingredients in ocean friendly packaging.
Salacia, the wife of Neptune, evokes the spirit of the open sea and the female energy of the ocean. Her name is derived from the Latin word “sal,” which means salt. Salt once served as a precious commodity in cultures around the globe.
